What is your favorite consulting phrase?

For some consultants, a favorite phrase might be “Synergize our marketing strategy with product rollouts” or “Optimize profits through right-sizing” or some other techno-jargon with little meaning. If consultants really want help organizations as they solve problems, then they better switch to an often-underused phrase.

“How can I help you?”

This is my favorite phrase in consulting because it is simple and elegant. Just think about how you might solve a current issue if you had extra help?

Offering to help others is a great way to practice empathy, listening skills, and critical-thinking. And I don’t think we say it enough. There are many things we should do more often (donate to charity, clean our closets, or empty our inbox), but when was the last time you asked someone if you could help them out?
